現在６名の生徒がセント・トーマス・アクワイナス高校（ＳＴＡ）に短期留学中です。そのＳＴＡで留学のお世話をしてくださっているトンプソン先生から、次のようなメールが届きました。

Dear Ohara,
I was just going to write to you when I saw your e-mail. We are really enjoying your students and everyone of them has been an excellent ambassador to Japan. They are all very energetic, polite, interested and cooperative and talented as well. We have enjoyed their presentations and the students love getting acquainted with them. Yesterday was really a wonderful day here! We had Japan Day and here is what we did:

All students could wear jeans and an Aquinas t-shirt if they brought in money to send to the disaster relief fund in Japan.
There were many posters in the halls to remind students of this special day that were made by my students.
In the morning Claire gave the prayer in Japanese, Ayaka announced Japan day in Japanese and Mayumi translated it into English.
Claire and I brought in our collection of yukatas and all your students dressed in them for the four lunch periods.
We decorated the stage in the Commons area(lunch room)with many Japanese things and posters about each of your students.
We brought in a piano and the twins both played music while the Aquinas students ate their lunch.
The cooks in the cafeteria set up a teppa yaki area in the cafeteria decorated with large sensu on the wall and students could select their own vegetables and choose chicken or beef and they cooked their meal in front of them.
The students and I cut out 800 small squares of white cardboard and during lunches the Aquinas students came up to have your students write words in Kanji on their white cards or sometimes on their arms like a tattoo.
Your students also walked around taking pictures and talking to students while they were eating lunch.
Two television stations and one Catholic magazine reporter were all here all day taking pictures. We will send them to you when we get them.
At the end of the day an Aquinas student said the closing prayer in Japanese.
We collected almost $2,000 from the students and we will send that to a special disaster relief fund in Japan.
It was a great day and everyone had a good time. We will be very sad to see the students leave here.
There have been no problems at school or at home with any of the students.
Tomomi was a little shy at first but she is getting along fine now.
Saturday will be Prom and they are going to have dinner together first at one host family's home and then the parents will take them to the dance. It will be on the stage of an outdoor theater. The weather is supposed to be very hot so it should be a nice evening. My husband and I will be there all evening and we're looking forward to that. They will have a chance to get a nice group picture in their prom dresses there.
Do you know of a special agency where we should send the money we collected? It is my job to arrange that.

P.S. We were all very sorry to hear that there was another very strong aftershock. We were relieved to learn that there was not another tsunami.

日本へ送る災害救援金を持ってきた生徒はジーンズとSTAのTシャツを着ることが許されました。ホールには私たちの生徒によって作られたこの特別な日を知らせるポスターがたくさんありました。朝、クレア(昨年日本に来た生徒)が日本語で祈りをささげ、アヤカ(松本彩佳)が日本語で「ジャパンディ」の宣言をし、マユミ(森田真由美)がそれを英語に訳しました。クレアと私は私たちの持っているゆかたを持ちより、日本の生徒みんなが4つの昼食時間帯(STAでは生徒を4つのグループに分け、時間をずらして昼食を取っている)の間それを着ていました。私たちは食堂のステージをたくさんの日本のものや日本の生徒一人ひとりについて書かれたポスターで飾りました。私たちはピアノも持ってきて、双子(上鈴姉妹)がSTAの生徒が昼食を食べている間、音楽を奏でました。食堂のコックは鉄板焼きを用意し、壁を大きな扇子で飾り、生徒が選んだ野菜、鶏肉または牛肉を目の前で調理しました。生徒と私は厚紙を切って800枚小さな白いカードを作り、昼休憩の間、STAの生徒は日本の生徒のところにやってきてそのカードに漢字で言葉を書いてもらったり、時には刺青のように腕に書いてもらったりしていました。日本の生徒は歩きまわって写真を撮ったり、STAの生徒が昼食を食べている間、話しかけたりしていました。２つのテレビ局と一つのカソリック系雑誌のレポーターがずっと写真を撮っていました。それが手に入ったら、送ります。この日の最後、一人のSTAの生徒が、日本語で結びの祈りを捧げました。生徒からは2000ドル近くが集まりましたので、日本の特別災害救援基金へ送ります。素晴らしい一日で、みんなが楽しみました。私たちは日本の生徒がここを去っていくのを見てとても悲しむことになるでしょう。どの生徒に関しても、今まで学校でも家庭でも問題はありませんでした。トモミ(和田朋美)は最初すこしシャイでしたが、今は慣れてOKです。土曜日(4月9日)はプロムで彼女らは最初、一軒のホストファミリーの家で一緒にディナーを食べた後、その両親がダンスへと連れて行ってくださいます。それは野外劇場のステージの上で行われます。天候はとても暑いということですので、気持ち良い夜になるでしょう。私は夫とともにずっとそこにいます。私たちはプロムを楽しみにしています。彼女たちはそこでプロムのドレスを着て、素晴らしい集合写真を撮るチャンスがあるでしょう。ところで、私たちが集めたお金を送る特別な機関を知っていますか。これを手配するのが私の仕事です。彼女たちのような素晴らしい生徒を送ってくれてありがとう。私たちは彼女たちが大好きです。
